Hair Loss (Alopecia): Causes, Evaluation & Treatment

Hair loss is far more than just a cosmetic concern—it is a medical condition with a wide variety of underlying causes. Whether you are noticing sudden shedding, gradual thinning along your part, or distinct patches of hair loss, finding the right solution starts with an accurate diagnosis.

Understanding the Causes

Hair loss can affect men and women of all ages and may stem from several different factors, including:

  • Hereditary & Hormonal Factors: Genetically driven sensitivity to hormones (androgenetic alopecia), leading to gradual follicle shrinking.

  • Autoimmune Conditions: Immune system misdirection targeting hair follicles (such as alopecia areata or scarring alopecias).

  • Stress & Illness: Physical or emotional stressors, illness, or major body changes causing temporary heavy shedding (telogen effluvium).

  • Scalp & Medical Conditions: Inflammatory conditions, nutritional deficits, or thyroid imbalances.

Because treatment success depends entirely on addressing the specific root cause, a thorough clinical evaluation—and sometimes a scalp skin biopsy and bloodwork—is essential to pinpoint your exact type of hair loss before starting therapy.
